20th Century Fox Releases First Trailer For ‘The New Mutants’

X-Men Meet the Horror Genre

With Marvel having a death grip on the connected universe movie market, Studios such as Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox have been searching for the right recipe to properly compete and introduce their own properties in a fresh way. However, with the success of last years raunchy and very adult ‘Deadpool’ movie, and this years dystopian movie ‘Logan’, based on a much older and grumpier Wolverine, Fox has taken the lead in stretching the boundaries of the superhero genre.

Enter ‘The New Mutants’. This new movie centered in the X-Men universe and based on the Comic Book series of the same name from the 1980’s, stars Maisie Williams (straight from Winterfell), Anya Taylor Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt, and will be the first film to combine the superhero and horror genres.

Watch the first official trailer here:

The story will focus on a group of young mutants who are being held in a secret government facility, where government scientist’s are seemingly performing all kinds of horrible experiments on these kids. The only question is, how much of what we see is being caused by the kids’ own mutant abilities?

We’ll find out this coming Spring, but no matter which direction the story goes, this will be a significant departure from both the comic book iterations of the New Mutant characters and the typical superhero movie in general. Which is interesting to say the least, and has definitely peaked my curiosity.

The New Mutants is set to hit theaters on April 13, 2018.
