First ‘AQUAMAN’ Trailer Finally Arrives

The highly anticipated AQUAMAN trailer hit Hall H in San Diego earlier today with a splash, as Warner Brother gave the world our first at the Justice League member’s solo outing. Check it out below.

If nothing else, this trailer packed a lot into its 2 minutes 25 seconds run time. We not only get our first live-action look at Queen Atlanna, Ocean Master, the world of Atlantis, and Black Manta, but also get a peek at Aurther and Mera’s relationship, and see Aquaman dawn his classic suit.

Director James Wan, most know for his contributions to the Horror genre (SAW, The Conjuring, Insidious), told the Warner Bros. Pictures SCDD panel that, for a movie based on a comic book character, Aquaman is “more like a science fiction movie than a superhero film.” Something that looked to be accurate in the footage featuring the underwater world.

Then in an extended, audience-only clip following the official trailer, a picture of the movie’s more adventurous side began to emerge, and Screen Rant was there to provide a full description. They wrote:

“The footage was essentially a second, much better trailer that opened with a trip through the desert, with Arthur and Mera uncovering the Tomb in which King Atlan’s message was hidden. (This also shows just how far inland Atlantis used to be.) In that moment, Mera puts a device into a bigger one and unlocks the message by using beads of sweat from Arthur’s forehead. After all, the device should be underwater when they open it. That’s when Arthur jokes, “Showoff… We could’ve just peed on it.” That’s when they receive the message from King Atlan about the Trident that holds all the power, and it can unite the Seven Kingdoms if held by a worthy king.

This extended Aquaman trailer also showed off plenty of more footage from the film in addition to the aforementioned desert sequence. Hall H attendees got to see Arthur going through combat training with his father, Thomas Curry (Temuera Morrison), after which they go to a bar where Thomas tells Arthur how special he is. There are also shots of Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), Arthur’s mother, fighting with a trident – the same trident that Aquaman uses in Justice League – but she is forced to leave her family when some people come for her. The trailer ends with Mera saying Atlantis has had kings before, then cutting to a shot of Jason Momoa wearing Aquaman’s classic costume. Elsewhere in the trailer, Mera is seen on the run from Black Manta and a group of armored men, as well as Dolph Lundgren’s Nereus for the first time.”

The movie certainly looks to have it’s issues however, and was met with a very mixed response. Much of the humor fell flat, the shots featuring the underwater world often look too much like a video game, and I’m still not convinced that Jason Momoa (who seems like an awesome guy and someone I’d love to hangout with one day), and his surfer bro version of the character, were a good idea to begin with.

On the bright side, Black Manta looks ridiculously cool and the movie seems to have a lighter tone than BvS and Justice League. Plus, there’s still a lot of post-production left to do, so there’s no need to panick just yet.
